Brilliant Biographies!

This was one of my absolute favorite units out of the whole year! Not to mention, I'm pretty sure my sweet seconds absolutely LOVED it too!

Our district splits our grading periods into quarters and for writing during the last quarter we are supposed to review Narrative, Informational, and Opinion writing. Since it was so close to the end of the year, I wanted to do something fun and that would keep everyone engaged. So, we wrote an {All About a Classmate} book!

The first thing we did was discuss biographies. I shared a few authentic biographies with the class that we had in our classroom library.

Then, students chose a partner! This is something that can be done by you OR by your kids! I wanted my students to work with someone that they didn't know very well, even by the end of the year. So, I had them choose a partner randomly out of a bag! It actually worked out absolutely perfect! I loved the pairings that happened, and some students really got to know another classmate that they
probably wouldn't have without this activity!

Afterwards, we discussed the writing process- specifically pre-writing (all the anchor charts are provided in the unit), and I introduced my students to interviews! We pretended we were famous movie stars being interviewed!

They took turns answering questions and recording answers! I created various question forms that you can use to to make it work for your class!

Then, we organized all of our facts and chose our favorites! In order to model this for my students, I interviewed another teacher! Then, when I had to model anything for this unit I used to her information!

Afterwards, we got to the fun part! Writing! My students wrote one paragraph, but you could easily have students write different paragraphs for various topics!  We went over Fun Facts, Topic Sentences, and Concluding Sentences.

Students wrote their drafts and published their writing! We had a Brilliant Biographies celebration and shared our writing with the class. And, they were too cute to not show off in the hallway!

Definitely one that I'll have to do every year!

Happy Teaching!
